Description

Engaging and unique Earth Day art project includes a video and printable. Use for Earth Day or any day for teaching conservation or environmental science. Standards align with fourth grade, but first grade on up will have fun creating their own directed draw gnome with an open ended environmental message.

Gnomes are fun to draw, and when students learn how to incorporate a "Save the Planet" message, it also makes for a meaningful project. Students will use simple shapes to draw their gnomes, learn about conservation symbols, how to draw them, and how to incorporate messaging creatively into their gnomes. Each project comes out differently, with its own unique personality.

We worked hard to create an engaging video that makes this lesson easy to teach. It also gets your students excited and ready to learn and helps them draw and create with a purpose.

We also created a PDF printable to assist you in teaching this lesson, including more activities for your students! Early finishers can stay focused and on task, too.

We've included:

MP4 Video Lesson with:

  • bright and cheerful gnome-inspired illustrations
  • visual, audio, and written instructions
  • embedded video snippets of hands-on "step-by-step" instruction.

✔24-page PDF Printable includes:

For you!

  • Supply List & Preparation Notes (simple supplies, easy prep!)
  • Learning Objectives & Standards (NCAS & NGSS)
  • “How to Use this Lesson” page with clear instructions
  • Q & A discussion guide regarding the meaning of 4 conservation symbols
  • Discussion / Art Critique Guide to aid in a meaningful discussion after completing projects and an art critique activity.
  • Printed-out reference slides of the video to help you manage the lesson and time.
  • Word Search answer key

For your students!

  • Self-directed drawing instructions are handed out optionally or used to differentiate four conservation symbols that could be incorporated into their gnome’s message.
  • Exploring & Explaining Symbols Guide that reviews the meaning of the 4 directed draw symbols.

For those early finishers!

  • Flash Card Memory Game with 8 symbols.
  • Word Search with 12 conservation-based words.
