How to use this Reading Comprehension Passage:

Promote environmentally conscious choices while improving literacy with your students using this reading comprehension passage! Students will read about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and use a variety of writing strategies to write a non-fiction summary.

You can begin this activity by reading through the informational article, “Why is Plastic Harmful?” This article explores the effects of plastic on the environment and our health. Students will learn about the synthetic compound Bisphenol A (also known as “BPA”) and about microplastics in our water. The article explores the relationship between plastic pollution, marine life, and the regulation of human hormones.

Students will then write a non-fiction summary of the information article.  There are two writing strategies included in this lesson. The first is called the “TMST Method” which uses an acronym to guide students towards important information from the article. A graphic organizer has been included for this summarization strategy. Students will fill out this graphic organizer and organize their information to write a summary paragraph.

The second writing strategy is called the “OUTLINE Method” and uses a similar acronym to scaffold writing a summary.  This method does not require a graphic organizer, as students will use the OUTLINE acronym to annotate the article and use their annotations to write their summary paragraphs.

To consolidate this activity, detailed answer keys have also been provided.
