This lesson teaches students how to write a nonfiction summary and explores examples of proper summary paragraphs. Students will identify what to include in a summary paragraph and what to leave out in order to solidify their understanding of this form of writing. They will use strategies to highlight important details from the text and compile them into a summary paragraph.
2. Reading Comprehension Passage - Plastic Waste and Pollution - Nonfiction Summary
Promote environmentally conscious choices while improving literacy with your students using this reading comprehension passage! Students will read about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and use a variety of writing strategies to write a nonfiction summary.
3. Writing a Nonfiction Summary Bundle - Three Informational Articles
This bundle explores three engaging and age-appropriate nonfiction articles for teenagers. Students will learn about financial literacy, the geography of cuisine, and the power of branding.
Students will write a nonfiction summary about the information presented in each article using the graphic organizer provided. This bundle teaches a writing strategy called the “TMST Method'' which uses an acronym to guide students toward important information from the article. Students will fill out this graphic organizer and organize their information to write a summary paragraph.
