The "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Legacy and Impact on Today" African American history resource offers a range of activities that engage students in learning about the history of the Civil Rights Movement through the words of Dr. King and his legacy. Students will explore Dr. King's beliefs on social issues and analyze their significance today. They will use Dr. King's own words as a reference to gain an understanding of his perspectives and insights. The students will appreciate Dr. King's contributions to the Civil Rights Movement, his role in achieving racial equality, and the relevance of his legacy today. Additionally, they will participate in a community service project that will deepen their understanding of the civil rights movement and help develop their ideas about effective citizenship.

All required materials, including lesson and service project implementation instructional guides, are provided.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Students will critically analyze Dr. King's legacy, contributions to the civil rights movement, and role in achieving racial equality.
  2. Students will explore the connection between the history of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, starting from 1865, and the ongoing pursuit of racial equality today.
  3. Students will identify and compare tactics and strategies used at different times during the struggle for civil rights.  
  4. Students will identify the causes and consequences of critical events in the civil rights movement.
  5. Students are empowered to think about their communities through a social justice lens by engaging in a service-learning project.

SUGGESTED GRADE LEVELS

  • Grades 6 – 9

  • Part 1 - Class Work: Approximately three Weeks (45-minute class periods)
  • Part 2 - Service Project Work: (the duration of the process varies)
