Description
Dive into the untold stories of diverse scientists in BIPOC, women, LGBTQIA+ backgrounds. This engaging independent research project encourages students to explore, celebrate, and present the achievements of underrepresented scientists, allowing them to see themselves in the heroes of science.
This project was created out of a need for my students to see themselves better represented in our science learning. Through this project, students get to choose a scientist from an underrepresented group (women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+), and study about their lives and accomplishments.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
2 Page Student Handout with project options, student checklist, Scientist List, Editable Student Rubric and Gallery Walk Student Handout. Please note that the only part of this resource that is editable is the student rubric.
HOW TO IMPLEMENT IN YOUR CLASSROOM
Students will choose a scientist and a type of project (news article, children's story, poster, or 3-D model) to begin this independent project. Then, students will conduct scientific research to learn about their scientist and their major accomplishments.
WHY IT'S ENGAGING FOR STUDENTS
STUDENT CHOICE in the project and the individual they study makes this project HIGHLY engaging. Students often choose to study scientists who they identify with. Students are amazed that some of their favorite things wouldn't be possible without some less widely studied, but just as important individuals.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE IN THE CLASSROOM
At the completion of this project- you can have students present their project as a gallery walk, in small groups or to the class. It has an easy-to-use and editable rubric so you can adjust the language and grading scale to your liking. The final projects are beautiful to display as a visual reminder of students' worth in your class and as scientists all year long.
BENEFITS
Implementing this project will help validate your students' identities and foster a safe and inclusive classroom for your students. This work matters- students deserve to learn about and study diverse scientists that they can identify with- and start to see themselves as scientists, because they are!
