Dialectical Journals for Hosseini's "A Thousand Splendid Suns" (Summer Reading)

This rigorous AP English Literature summer assignment contains a step by step description of how to complete 10 dialectical journals in addition to reading Khaled Hosseini's novel, "A Thousand Splendid Suns." This could be modified to fit another text, although the teacher models and non-example are for this text. The document contains a rubric to make grading easier and enough guidance so that the students can complete the assignment independently.

In addition to the journals, students will complete literary device flashcards for the top 20 devices that appear on the AP English test. Instructions for the flashcards and a model are included here.

Note: this could be used through the year. I have students complete dialectical journals as they complete other texts and they tell me that it helps them stay focused and process the author's choices in the text.
