Dealing with Cheating and Plagiarism

This document contains rules I go over before quizzes and tests, especially at the beginning of the year; this cuts down on arguing when or if I have to deal with a behavior issue or cheating issue during or after an assessment.

It also contains language that's available in my free download (syllabus) about what plagiarism and cheating are, what steps I will take after an incident of plagiarism or cheating, and what the consequences will be.

There is also a student handout with language explaining what is and is not okay when it comes to helping others and using sources. This could be modified to suit your needs.

The final element is a few pages of sample referral language and parent email language for use when a student has cheated or plagiarized; this is what I have used during my 14 years in the classroom and is only there as an example to help you as you think about what to write or if you feel you need a template to get started.
