Dead Poets Society Film Unit with poetry analysis, writing prompts and more!

This Dead Poets Society Film Unit is one of my very favorite units to teach! I save it for a time when my students need a break after completing a rigorous novel or writing a difficult essay. It is a great way to use the inspirational movie to teach characterization, interpretation, poetry analysis and writing. It is a fun way to learn literary analysis but through film!


Included in this 35 page resource:

1. Student Packet
This comprehensive student packet includes viewing guide questions to guide students through the film.

My favorite topic of discussion is the symbolism in the movie so I have included a page on the symbols of Dead Poets Society. What does the candle shown in the beginning of the movie represent? How about the open window? Vomit in the snow?

Students will analyze characters by identifying character traits, static or dynamic characterization, and round or flat characterization.

There is poetry analysis for "O Captain, My Captain" by Walt Whitman and "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. Students will learn the historical context behind "O Captain, My Captain" written in honor of President Abraham Lincoln.

The analysis includes rhyme scheme and figurative language.

There is also a Dialectical Journal with key quotes from the movie for students to analyze.
