Description
Looking to show the movie Dark Water to your science class and need questions (and answers)? This powerful true-story about poisonous Teflon chemicals is a must-see -- over 99% of us have "forever chemicals" linked to cancer in our bloodstreams. This film shows how that disturbing fact came to be... it is a story still playing out (and students can explore this using the extra info in the guide).
Mark Ruffalo co-produced the film and is the lead actor; it was released in early 2020 (126 min; PG-13 for thematic content and a few instances of strong language). It is a legal drama, great for environmental/chemistry classes. There are multiple scenes that will provoke a response from students (cows dead from cancer; babies born with birth defects; a chemical company testing on its own workers). The film is rated "fresh" at 90% on the "Tomatometer" and based on a New Yorker article entitled, "The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare."
The thinking student's film worksheet includes 3 pages (PDFs) of questions to answer while watching the 2-hour film, optional extension questions to spark discussion in class as well as information for students ready to explore more. And of course, a detailed teacher key is included!
Note: This zip file contains PDFs (the 3-page student guide and a separate teacher key).
