Constructed Response Informative Writing for 4th & 5th Grade State Tests

Do you struggle teaching your 4th and 5th graders how to write multi-paragraph essays for the state writing tests? I have developed a systematic process for modeling effective writing strategies that students can carry over to the test and independently produce an informative/expository essay!

Repetition of skills is KEY and I’ve provided two additional sets of prompts and articles for student practice in addition to the completely modeled example!

Through 5 detailed lesson plans, teachers will help students tackle a prompt, create their own outlining tool (from that blank, scratch paper!), pull and cite evidence from 2 related high level reading passages, and write effective introduction, detail, and conclusion paragraphs using a strong model.

From there, students are given the tools to revise and edit their own writing, as well as using a peer edit checklist tool. A detailed rubric is also included for assessment purposes.

This method has helped my own students become confident, skilled writers. As a whole, my classes have routinely scored in the 80% (or higher) range on the Language Arts state tests with writing being a very strong component! I encourage to try and adopt this process for your own students!
