Description
These resources introduce students to the math involved in car ownership. I use these materials as an introductory period to pique students’ interest and familiarize them with automotive terminology and the process of buying and leasing through a dealership. Students compare new and used cars, compare buying and leasing, recognize the “hidden” fees associated with the buying & leasing processes, calculate how & when those fees are applied, and examine the costs required after the car comes home. I supplement the lessons by showing students actual receipts from our local registration office and a copy of a dealership invoice. Appropriate for middle school through high school students.
[After implementing these resources, I transition to a detailed look at the math behind car depreciation and then how that math is applied through online car-related calculators.]
All resources come in pdf form. The following resources (scaffolded notes) also include PowerPoints that are animated where the answers appear on each click:
- Buying New vs Used Cars Research/Notes
- Mandatory Dealership Fees
- Non-mandatory Dealership Fees
- True Cost of Car Ownership
- Buying vs Leasing Research/Notes
- Costs to Leasing
