10 Lists of Fluency Phrases and Data Sheets (ccvc/cvcc & primer sight words)

These fluency phrases have been specifically designed for my targeted small groups. In our dedicated small group sessions, I distribute the same list of phrases to each student, as they are all working on the same skills. The students engage in whisper reading, where they quietly read each phrase aloud. As their teacher, I carefully listen and provide assistance with any challenging words that may arise.

During this activity, the students have the opportunity to check off one of the three boxes each time they read a phrase. Sometimes, they take the phrases back to their seats to practice independently, while other times they practice with a partner. Once each child becomes fluent in reading the phrases, either myself or another student checks the final box.

By utilizing this approach, my students benefit from multiple opportunities to practice reading words with blends. It promotes skill development, fosters confidence, and encourages active engagement in their learning.

Primer & ccvc/cvcc Word List & Data Sheets

This is basically a list of words in a table format! It’s nothing fancy, but my students LOVE reading these words in small group and as a partner activity! The table and data sheets are also great for keeping documentation of what students know!

Some ideas of using these tables…

  • Blend/Read a word and paint a word
  • Blend/Read a word and highlight a word
  • Use dot paint or crayons with partners to play a word version of (tic-tac-toe). Students have to read the word before dotting or coloring the word.
  • Cut out the words. The teacher says a word and the first student to find the word gets the card. The winner is the student with the most cards.
  • You could also just use these tables as a quick assessment. The Dolch words are listed in order of frequency.

Beginning Blends Cards

In my classroom, I incorporate the use of grapheme cards to facilitate quick identification of letter sounds and blends among my students. The process is simple: I hold up a card, and the students respond by saying the corresponding sound. They then proceed to read the three words listed under each blend on the card. This activity serves as an ideal warm-up exercise during our small group sessions. By engaging in this practice, my students are able to enhance their phonics skills and develop fluency in reading blends.
