Description
These reading fluency practice are perfect for your beginning or struggling readers who need practice segmenting words, reading high frequency words in text, and developing reading fluency. Each unit in this bundle includes decodable phonics based passages with comprehension questions, decodable fluency sentences and data sheets, word lists with data sheets, and phonics flash cards.
Using the Fluency Sentences:
The fluency sentences were created to be used during small group instruction, but you can use them as you wish. During our targeted small group time I give each student the same list (these students are working on the same skills). They then whisper read each phrase. I listen carefully, and help students with words as needed. Each time they read the phrase, they check off one of the three boxes. I usually check off the last box or students read the sentences to a friend.
Using the Word List and Data Sheets:
This is basically a list of words in a table format! It’s nothing fancy, but my students LOVE reading these words during small group and as a partner activity! The table and data sheets are also great for keeping documentation of what students know!
Some ideas of using these tables…
- Blend/Read a word and paint a word
- Blend/Read a word and highlight a word
- Use dot paint or crayons with partners to play a word version of (tic-tac-toe). Students have to read the word before dotting or coloring the word.
- Cut out the words. The teacher says a word and the first student to find the word gets the card. The winner is the student with the most cards.
- You could also just use these tables as a quick assessment. The Dolch words are listed in order of frequency.

Grapheme Cards
In my classroom I use letter cards to help my students identify letter sounds. When I hold up the letter “oi” my students must say “oi says /oi/”. I really feel like these cards help my students develop automatic identification of the spelling pattern.
