As its name suggests, acceptance and Commitment Therapy/Training (ACT) teaches acceptance of the things we cannot control and a commitment to actions that improve and enrich our lives. It is founded on the understanding that we are all fundamentally human and that life can be messy and complicated.

ACT’s purpose is to help us develop skills to deal more effectively with difficult thoughts, feelings, and emotions and lessen their influence over us. The aim is to clarify our values (the people and things we care about the most, the kind of person we want to be, and what we believe in); to focus on what is important, and fully engage in whatever we are doing. It uses mindfulness, acceptance strategies, commitment, and behavior change techniques to increase psychological flexibility – known as the “Superpower of mental health.”

While ACT in a therapy setting, practiced by licensed professionals, can be more complex, the basic philosophies and processes are straightforward. Used in a more flexible, principle-driven way, Acceptance and Commitment Training can provide a creative framework for developing social-emotional skills within a classroom environment.

“ACT helps clients embrace their demons and follow their hearts.” (Dr. Russ Harris, 2006).
