What educators are saying
This was a great activity for my AVID students early in the year and helped me get to know hem much better.
Used this at the beginning of the year as a way for students to get to know each other better. Thanks so much!
Description
I created this assignment for my middle school AVID class, but it would be good for any classroom striving to create a safe and respectful learning environment. If I were still teaching in high school, I think it would translate well. It allows students to work with technology, create, write, share, take notes, and act in a professional manner.
The instructions are clear and it includes Required Information, as well as, Optional Information for students that move at different paces.
It also requires a "Teaching Slide" that allows students to share advice or interests. Some students brought in games they play during their cultural New Year's. Some taught the class about their favorite professional sports team and where that passion came from. Others taught the class about their hobbies, such as Foklorico Dancing, Drawing, Sports, Baking, Creating, etc.
I gave them 4-5 days in the computer lab, after going over my expectations and modeling a presentation.
When it was time to present, we started off by making sure that the class knew, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” meaning that this is to help our class grow closer together, and the information shared is not for middle school-gossip. A brave 7th grader started out her presentation with that idea, and it set precedence for the rest of the students. It was unbelievable how brave the kids were and how willing they were to open up.
I hope that this works for other teachers as well as it worked for my classes!
This packet includes:
The assignment/expectations (pg. 1)
A clear rubric for the teacher to use, while students present (pg. 2)
Expectations for students while someone is presenting, and what information the class needs to take notes on (pg. 3)
A note to the teacher (pg. 4)
