What type of converting units word problems can I expect to find in this packet?
- Unit conversions involving length, weight, time, & capacity
- Metric conversion word problems with whole numbers
- Metric conversion word problems with decimals through the tenths
- Customary conversion word problems with whole numbers
- Customary conversion word problems with non-whole units (5 ft. 8 in.) or fractions (8-½ pounds)
- Multistep measurement word problems where students must complete a unit conversion and also use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division in a real-world situation
- Note that following the 4th Grade common core standard, all measurement word problems in this lesson go from a larger unit to a smaller unit (i.e. feet -> inches, liters -> milliliters), so the conversions only require multiplication and not division.
What does Sally’s “gradual release model” entail?
- Sally’s lessons follow an “I Do, We Do, You Do” format. A math concept is introduced whole group, students then practice with a partner, and finish with independent work time. This deliberate scaffolding keeps students from feeling defeated or frustrated!
- Sally’s packets also build slowly in difficulty. We meet students where they are, regardless of level. As students gain confidence, the problems get progressively harder. Not all students will complete all problems and that is by design!
- Each packet finishes with a “Challenge Page” for anyone who needs something extra!
In addition to the deliberate scaffolding, this converting units lesson also includes an instructional guide jam-packed with teaching hacks and best practices. There is also a “Misconceptions” section that allows you to be one step ahead of mistakes students are most likely to make.
