* U.S. HISTORY MATTERS- PERSONAL HISTORY REFLECTION *

This is a great back-to-school assignment that I've done for years in my US History classes! It allows me to get to know my students in a way I probably wouldn't in class, it serves as a "preview" of their writing skills, and helps students to realize that their own personal past is important and determines who they are today in the same way that our nation's past impacts the present and the future. Whether the event is good, bad, big or small it's important!

Assign on the first day as homework but give students a few days to get it back to you so that they are thoughtful.

For the teacher: In the past I've used this for grades 8-11th. I've received really positive stories but I tend to receive more negative events- be prepared for that. BUT, their view on the event and what it's taught them is really the lesson here.
