I think it is a great way to have real life conversations with my students about where math is used in the "Real World." It is also much more fun (and difficult) than a regular assignment and test. A mini-unit designed to give students an abundance of hands-on measuring experience. This unit starts with a lab to help students understand why there are universal measurement systems. Then, students take notes on measuring devices before they jump into a lab where they measure table "mascots." To prepare for an assessment (or could be used as a group assessment) students complete a measurement race to put their new skills to the test.
