Argumentative Essay: One-Point Rubric

A one-point rubric puts much of the ownership of assessment on the students. The rubric includes detailed criteria for students on what is needed to complete the writing assignment "at standard." The students are required to look deeply at their writing and decide if they have met standard (and if so will add nothing to their rubric), if they have exceeded standard, or if they are below standard. If they are below standard or believe they have exceeded standard, students will write in the bla

UTEC: Essay Writing as a Genre UTEC is an acronym and tool that I developed in 2009 to help my students to organize their ideas and to expand upon them to fill a page or paragraph. The process of using UTEC as a district or grade-level team allows students to have a structure to remind them of the components of quality writing. This approach to test prep, quality paragraph, and essay writing fits into the genre model that students are already familiar with through their Language Arts and Reading
