I have my students create a 24-page prefix and suffix booklet. They must include the definition of a prefix, the definition of a suffix, 10 prefixes, 10 suffixes, 5 words on each page that use that prefix or suffix, and an illustration on each page. This is a very detailed rubric used to assess these booklets. The rubric tells what should be on each page.

After spending hours grading essays, I developed a quicker rubric that cut my time in half. I found that I was writing the same comment on many papers. This rubric has the major/common areas that need improvement: punctuation, spelling, simple word usage, lack of support/elaboration, lack of transition words, and simple sentence usage. This works well with a book unit. I have used it while reading chapter books with my students. You give students a set of words for a section of a book or have them pick a number of words they don't know. Cut the roles apart and put them in an envelope to have students draw out their part. Students then work together to fill out the dictionary. I have also included a rubric for you to grade the project with.
