Oil and Water Science Experiment

I did this with my students today. I saved up a bunch of water bottles and the students watched as I put it together. All you do is add some water, oil and food coloring. I put a little super glue on the lids so my behavior babies wouldn't have the chance to make a mess. I teach kindergarten, so I used the younger version of the papers I created. I first let them explore with the bottles, tilt them, move them, give them a little shake. Then I had them get our their science journals. We added t

Student Self-Evaluation for Targeted Improvement

Self-reflection is such an important part of growth and our students are still learning how to self-evaluate. If your students are anything like mine, open-ended reflections lack depth or don't get to the root of their issues or fail to identify other problems they have or a mixture of all of the above. With this self-evaluation, students will be exposed to a variety of elements that make a good student and allow them to identify targeted areas in which they can improve. I use this at the end of

This survey can be used as a pre-/post- evaluation, or a simple way to get to know where your students. For my own classes, I uploaded the questions to a survey generator online, then provided students the link. I did this at the beginning and end of the school year. This survey gave me immediate feedback on the skill

Students will respond to a writing prompt to explain the stages of a flowering plants life cycle: germination, plant development, fertilization and seed production. They will be writing in the vantage point of a seed. For each stage they will need to describe what is happening to them and what kind of changes are taking place. Students get points for content as well as paragraph structure. I also allowed my students to illustrate one scene from their story for extra credit. This could be a requi

Teacher Checklist Template

After teaching for a few years, I noticed a pattern in what I would take daily/weekly notes on in morning meetings before teaching classes or throughout the day. I got tired of having bits and pieces of information spread out on my desk on sticky notes, so I made a template specifically designed to organize the regular notes that I make to better keep track of my daily to-do's, including lesson planning topics, general notes, correspondence, documents to print and copy, and grading. If you find

Here is one example of a rubric I have used when implementing interactive notebooks in my geography courses. The HOTLINK is how students link the information they were given by the teacher to their lives. They need to be able to make connections to course work that they can relate to in some way, shape, or form. I typically will give all points for really detailed pics/writing even though the rubric asks for more. Let's face it, high school kids are busy with sports, clubs, other classes, boy/gi

Behavior Reflection Sheet

You can use this behavior reflection sheet to conference with a student when they need additional coaching and support through a tough situation. Students need you to give them support, reiterate the expectation, give them the breakdown of how the expectation was not met, and then give them the benefits of complying and the closure to do better next time. This sheet helps the student think through their behavior before you have this difficult conversation with them so they have "think time".

I use this Correction form in my math class. It is a template that requires students to rework the problems they missed on an assessment and also write a statement about what they learned from the mistake they made! I think reflecting on the mistake helps them learn from it. Also, I allow my kids to earn back points they missed on the assessment by completing this form.

Importance of learning science

Learning science is particularly important for students as it equips them with the essential knowledge and skills to make sense of the world around them. Science education is not just about memorizing facts. It fosters critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving abilities. These skills are not only useful in school but also in everyday life beyond the classroom.

Benefits of learning science

Learning science offers many benefits to students both in school and beyond. In fact, it helps students:

  • Question the world around them and seek evidence-based explanations
  • Cultivate their ability to observe, experiment, and analyze data
  • Nurture a sense of curiosity, awe, and wonder about the natural world
  • Understand natural phenomena and the laws that govern the universe

With a solid foundation in science, teachers can help empower students to think critically, solve problems, make informed decisions, and engage with the world around them in meaningful ways.

Teaching with science resources

One of the best parts about science class is all of the possibilities for hands-on, collaborative learning! Think: labs, experiments, inquiry-based activities, and design challenges. These activities encourage students to explore scientific concepts by observing, asking questions, and conducting investigations. Additionally, with small group centers, students can engage in group experiments, discussions, and projects that require them to collaborate, share ideas, and solve problems together.
