This is an informational sheet which explains the structure, form, and intent of the classically structured essay. It provides the classical nomenclature for elements of an argumentative essay as well as an outline of them. It explains the form and intent of paragraphs within an argumentative essay, and details the various sub-divisions present within the classically structured essay (Exordium, Narratio, Partitio, Confirmatio, Refutatio, and Peroratio).

This is an essay outline that I use as a pre-writing activity before students begin writing an argumentative essay, including a counter argument and rebuttal. It helps the students gather their evidence before they begin writing. This assignment takes approximately one hour.
