A Rotation of Axes

At the high end of applied Trigonometry in Analytic Algebra or Precalculus courses we encounter the Rotation of Axes, always with conics. There is a practical use for this technology because it teaches us to interrelate quantities in different frames of reference. The actual rotation requires significant calculations and the theory is developed by the trigonometric difference and multiple angle formulae. It's always a chore to do one of these rotations - but your students should be aware tha

Solving Triangles

We solve triangles using the three laws: Cosines, Sines and Tangents - in addition we show derivations of the three laws and, in the case of the law of tangents, Newton's Formula. As our presentation is rather parsimonius, we offer talking points in the vocabulary section. We suggest the use of the Law of Tangents for both SAS and SSS solutions. And,demonstrate the traditional use of the laws of Sines and Cosines as well. The unit is completed with a discussion of SSA and the ambiguous case.

This is a pictorial derivation of the sine and cosine of the sum of two angles. It has helped us to understand the outcome by actually seeing the quantities in play. And, for our visual students, the concept is solidified. We suggest that you use this as a handout to accompany your presentation in class. The verbiage is parsimonius - but we offer some talking points in the Vocabulary section. AA Geometric Derivation of the Trigonometric angle sum formulas by Orrin White is licensed unde
