As a middle school teacher, I used to dread taking days off. After continuously getting reports of bad/disrespectful behavior from substitutes, I knew I had to do something. I came up with a letter writing assignment. Students reflect on the previous day(s) by writing letters to the substitute, their parents/guardians, and my building principal. Looking for new ways to encourage goal setting and reflection? Try out this quick postcard prompt to get students thinking about their future self. My co-teachers and I like to combine the written prompt with the app Aging Booth. After students take a picture of themselves it ages them far into their senior years. After some giggles, we frame writing the postcard to yourself can mean your future self a month from now, a year from now, or further into the future.
