The Vowel Rule
This chart helps young readers remember what to do with words with more than one vowel. Once the rule is repeated rhythmically so the children have heard it a couple of times, I also explain to them, "Sometimes the vowels walk next to each other, but sometimes they walk with a friend in the middle." Because I'm showing this chart to children while I'm teaching it, I write the word 'name' as my first example of a long vowel word since it's the last word recited in "The Vowel Rule".
