These learning stations are created as an introduction to the memoir, Just Mercy. In these six learning stations, students will be presented with components of the text that will front load concepts they’ll need to understand prior to reading so that they can better understand the text. They can also be used in conjunction with literature circles. These learning stations can be done in person, with students physically rotating from station to station, or they can be done digitally and submitted

Fundamentals of Democracy - Three/Four Part Cards
This PDF can be used to make a set of three/four part cards useful when teaching the fundamental ideas associated with a democratic government. For each idea there is a control card (word and picture), a picture card, a word card, and a description card. Concepts included are: democracy, elections, Rule of Law, Majority Rule, public servants, Civil Rights, and representation. The set should be printed onto card stock, cut, and laminated prior to use.

I used this packet to teach A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown, A Place to Stand by Jimmy Santiago Baca, and The Day Freedom Died by Charles Lane. Students chose the book they were most interested in. They met in groups to discuss what happened in each section of the book, how that section related to the two essential questions in the packet, and to summarize each section they read.
