This lesson introduces the Pop Art of Roy Lichtenstein. We look at his comic book style portraits and learn how to create our own. Students match their facial expression to a quote in a word bubble to create an expressive self portrait. I did this lesson with a 9/10th grade studio art class and the results were great! My 7th grade gifted students spend second semester working on their passions every Friday in class. This is often called Genius Hour or the 20% Project. Students have to write a proposal of how they plan to spend the time, blog about the progress, and present all they have accomplished in a "TED Talk" evening at the end of the unit.
