Chess is an excellent classroom activity that can be enjoyed by students of all levels. If your students play chess in class, but have limited time, at the end of the period they can jot down where the pieces are on this sheet, and save time re-setting the board the next class time. This lesson covers the freezing temperature of water and how it can be altered to lower the temperature at which water freezes. In doing so, students perform a lab to make their own ice cream. It also allows students to measure using a graduated cylinder and triple beam balance. Measurements are made in metric units. Also included are questions, a graph for students and several questions regarding the lab. There is also some ideas for extension activities.

My precocious 5th graders always feel very sophisticated using these and understanding the meaning of the symbols.
