I Have a Dream Speech Analysis Discussion Guide
This speech analysis discussion guide highlights the rhetorical devices used by King with margin annotations and correlating color coded lines underlined in the text. I use this key to show the students, "How did the author say it?" (a common core step when doing close and critical reading). Using this activity helps the students understand the speech better and helps them with evaluating what King was saying.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from a Birmingham Jail
While imprisoned in Birmingham, Alabama, Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a powerful letter defending his tactics and sharing his beliefs. Students will read a selected portion of the letter and answer questions regarding MLK's message. The questions have the students re-read the text, copy selected passages and interpret ideas. The questions guide the students to examine the text closely and are very specific to allow for deep understanding.

Student Directions Cards (spanish)
I used these with PK-2nd. I laminated them and glued a magnet on the back. I place them on the board as I'm giving directions/instructions for an assignment. The students reference to the board if they forget what to do after completing a task. It takes some practice but when they get it, it really minimizes dependence on their teacher.
