This is a FREE Math Pre-Assessment that I use in my Grade 7 classroom. It looks at basic skills - multiplication, division, rounding, place value, area, fractions, percents, decimals etc. It's surprising how many students even in Grade 8 or 9 who struggle with long division, for example. This short pre-assessment gives you a starting place for working with your students in September.

In this high interest, extensive assignment, students are given a three part project broken into daily tasks. The project is designed to assess the students profieciency with linear equations. Pink Slip - for missing homework
This is a strategy I got from Harry Wong (great presenter and author!). It's called a Pink Slip, and students fill it out whenever they do not have their homework. I don't listen to excuses, I just have them fill out the form, and I'll look at it later to see what their excuse is. I keep these on file, and they have come in handy for parent conferences (especially if a student is saying they didn't have time to do their homework due to sports or something or the sort).

Solving Linear Equations for y Color by Number
Students solve equations for y and based on their answers color the corresponding part of the picture based on their answers. Two step usually required in solving for y.
