Tiered Reader Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"
My students examine these lyrics as Joyce Carol Oates dedicates her short story "Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?" to Bob Dylan. My students read the story and then watch the film adaptation called Smooth Talk. Tiered reader questions focus on thematic development, word choice denotation and connotation, author's purpose, and making inferences. I have complied four songs from various genres and time periods for students to practice standard based skills with. The focus standards of this activity are: theme, word choice, author's purpose, and parallelism. Students are also given a task where they can connect the song to their personal experiences or the world around them. I am teaching this during a rhetoric unit, but it would also be great for a poetry unit.
