Surface Area

This activity guides the learner in finding the surface area of a 3-D object (cube). TLW classifies the 3-D object by labeling its edges, faces, and vertices. Then, given dimensions and a visual representation of the net of a cube, TLW calculate the area of each face and sum the total for the cube's surface area. I use this resource as an interactive math journal activity for my alternate middle school math class, but it can be used as differentiated notes, quiz, or for reinforcement or review.

This guided note page is a perfect addition to a lesson about liquid volume/capacity. Students record the US Customary units in order from smallest to largest, abbreviations for cups, pints, quarts, half-gallon, and gallon, and how many cups each unit holds. Students also draw the "Giant G" diagram that relates the units of liquid volume. I 3-hole punch this note page and have my students keep it in their binder as a reference to help with homework. The file also includes an answer key.
