SQ3R Non-Fiction Reading Strategy
As students progress into higher grades, their academic success increasingly depends on their ability to read, comprehend and recall non-fiction text. Teach the SQ3R strategy, as it gives the brain an opportunity to sort and organize information. Students are able to reflect upon and consider how the information fits into their prior knowledge, what they might be asked on an assessment, and whether there are gaps in information (meaning they need to reread to understand).

Outlining Text - Note-taking Strategy
Outlining is a form of note-taking for non-fiction text. It is not a substitute for SQ3R active reading strategy. It is a post-reading (after reading) strategy because it requires the student to think about and become more familiar with the topic. First the student should read the assigned non-fiction text using active reading SQ3R strategies. Then return to outline the information. Check out my SQ3R non-fiction anchor chart, lesson plan and guided notes.
