The Great Debaters Viewing Guide

This movie is a must in my public speaking class. I use this movie to preface our debate unit as well as to demonstrate how public speaking is not just a required course, but a useful tool that can motivate and inspire people. Viewing guide includes comprehension questions surrounding the movie's action as well as objective-based questions (summary, text structure, etc.). Such a great resource for any public speaking class or unit. This movie relates to the civil rights movement as well.

This show has so much going for it: positive representation of a diverse cast, representation of how to set boundaries in relationships, the importance of communication in any relationship. Not to mention all the amazing media and literary devices used to highlight emotion and pique viewer interest. This unit is aligned with the Ontario Curriculum (Language 2023 and Health 2019)

This handout is designed as a fun classroom activity that also teaches students about genre-specific allusions. While students view the movie *Shrek,* they use this handout to spot allusions to fairy tales, fables, and pop culture. The handout contains over 30 allusions with additional blanks for students to add their own. When I use this game in my class, the student who spots and correctly explains where the most allusions occur in the movie wins a prize.
