Sentencing Goals and Options
This resource will take up two 75-minute class periods. The PowerPoint looks at the purpose of sentencing, the sentencing process and the different types of sentencing. The guided note allows students to copy down the note in a scaffolded manner. To end there is a research task where students list the aggravating and mitigating factors, the mandatory minimum or maximum sentence and what they would give the criminal if they were the judge. Criminal Defences
This package includes a PowerPoint, guided notes and research activity. The lesson looks at the different types of criminal defences for mental states. The lesson looks at NCR (not criminally responsible) and how the courts determine if there has been a mens rea.
