The Scarlet Letter and Tone: The Almost Synesthesia Project

Created by
Party Literati
While I love The Scarlet Letter, sometimes it can be challenging to make older material relevant to our students. I love this project for so many reasons: it encourages students to engage deeply with selected text by close reading both language and sound; it challenges students to read, write, analyze, and listen; and it allows students to share personal style through their choice of song. This project can be applied to any text, but it works particularly well with The Scarlet Letter.

Students will begin by listing their own identities and making personal connections, then they will explain how various identities can be seen in a positive or negative light, and finally discuss Wes Moore's identity in the book and how his actions help to create this identity. This exercise uses J.K. Rowling's Harvard Address to teach students to read a text closely, looking for specific aspects that prepares them for analysis. I also use this exercise to teach students to annotate as they read. Specific instructions on what to look for and how to annotate are given before the activity begins. The reading ends with questions that lead out from the pre-reading instructions. Rowling's speech is inspiring and her style is a great way for students to interact closely with

I put stations in quotes for this product as one requires the entire class as the students will work together to accomplish a goal without the teacher's input much like the characters of the novel we are introducing (Lord of the Flies) The other two stations function as true stations, one of which is a writing prompt, thematically connected to the story, and the other is a prediction making station.
