I Have a Dream Analysis of Rhetorical Techniques

This activity requires students to be familiar with allusion, parallel structure, imagery, repetition and metaphor. You will need a copy of Dr. King's speech for students' reference. Students will identify five examples of each of the techniques and explain why he chose them and/or what effect he intended. The activity is suitable for individuals, pairs, or small groups. The resulting analyses could be reported orally to the class or handed in as a written assignment.
