Context Clue Graphic Organizer

Here is a context clue graphic organizer I created to help students define words as they read. It can be modified to provide exact words in a specific text or can be used for independent words they don't know. I teach different strategies to define words and then on this graphic organizer, to increase their metacognition, they need to code which strategy they used. This helps them internalize the strategies.

Idioms:Show Don't Tell:Simile:Metaphor:Visualizing Text

This template can be used to help students see the difference between a show sentence and tell sentence. Simile's and metaphors in mentor texts can be cut and pasted into the show sentence boxes. This is also an effective way to illustrate the meaning of an idiom. Students are asked to illustrate what they see when the author "paints a picture" with their words. Then they are asked to tell in a sentence what they really mean. It really shows them how a show sentence is far more interesting

Quick and easy scavenger hunt to do after reading Owl Moon by Jane Yolen.My students loved doing this! After reading to them, I printed the pages out and placed them around the room, like task cards. They loved hunting for the different types of figurative language throughout the story!
