The purpose of these handouts is to assist students with being familiar with cursive font. It is important for students to be able to write in cursive, but it is also important for them to be able to read in cursive, and identify certain letters in cursive font (i.e. r, l, or i). Although students may not write in cursive on a regular basis, they may need to write in cursive for various reasons in the future (i.e. signing documents).

Student Fluency Self Assessment

This self assessment rubric can be used with students one on one, in small groups, or as a class. After a discussion of fluent reading practices, students will assess their own fluency with teacher guidance and identify areas for improvement. This can be used 3-4 times a year, with different colored pens or markers, in order for students to see thir growth and choose new goals. They will then choose two concrete strategies for meeting their fluency goals.

I added a picture to the letter to help children remember the letter sound and the picture together. When children think of the letter g they should now automatically think of girl. Children could colour in the picture to help their memory.
