This is a short packet (4 pages) where students look at some poems and determine what the writing is saying on the surface (explicitly) versus the deeper meaning (implicitly). I use this early on in my poetry unit with 8th graders to showcase some different styles of poetry. There are four poems included (along with questions for each), and then students have the space to write their own poem--hopefully one with a deeper meaning showcased through an extended metaphor or comparison!
