Synonym Tic-Tac-Toe

Students divide into two teams and take turns choosing a section on a Tic-Tac-Toe game board. If students correctly identify words as synonyms (or not), they get to put their X or O in the space. If they answer incorrectly, play moves to the other player/team. Three in a row makes a winner! There are three game boards with words and answer keys. One board is left blank so additional games may be created - students may even want to create a game board. These games are fun to play as a whole

Idioms:Show Don't Tell:Simile:Metaphor:Visualizing Text

This template can be used to help students see the difference between a show sentence and tell sentence. Simile's and metaphors in mentor texts can be cut and pasted into the show sentence boxes. This is also an effective way to illustrate the meaning of an idiom. Students are asked to illustrate what they see when the author "paints a picture" with their words. Then they are asked to tell in a sentence what they really mean. It really shows them how a show sentence is far more interesting
