Hexagonal Thinking - Regional Differences between the North and the South

Allow students to explore the regional differences between the North and the South through hexagonal thinking. Collaborative pairs/groups arrange the hexagonal cards to discover patterns and relationships. Once finished, pairs/groups create a summary of their arrangement. After the summary, I like to send a student out (the reporter) to visit with the other groups. Group members share their summaries with the reporter who then reports back to his group. A list of 756 vocabulary terms (1 per page) for US History. I assign these as extra credit assignments throughout the year for about 3 points apiece. It's up to the teacher how many you will allow, but its a nice way to get your students to do some work and raise their grade. The student also must give a short description and then make his/her work designing the paper as colorful and appealing as possible. Messy or rushed work will not be taken.

I have created a "live" dictionary for my students that I laminate and paste on a large wall in my classroom. As the year progresses so does the wall. I have tried to stick to commonly misunderstood or misused words, and words seen on the state history test (STAAR). This includes the vocabulary word on one page, and the definition on a separate page. (To allow the words to be large and visible from anywhere in the room).
