Math Poems To Practice Multiplication Facts

These poems can be used with students in grades K-8 to highlight and enhance learning on a variety of math topics. I believe that children learn best through various modes of learning. These poems will be great to use as an overview for what you will be studying or as a review of previously learned concepts. Poems can be chanted or sung. I have tried to create poems that can be sung to almost any children's song. You don't have to be musical to use these songs! Just willing to look at math in

Doubles Song / Doubling Rhyme / Multiplication / Two Times Table

I wrote this rhyme to help second and third-graders memorize their doubles facts. While they often could double 1-5 with ease, they tended to get mixed up with the products of 6, 7, 8 and 9 when multiplied by two. After "singing" this enough times, I could hear my students whispering the lines to themselves when doing computations! Eventually, as with anything that we memorize, they needed to refer to the rhyme less and less, and eventually it was committed to memory. I recommend writing it out

This song was written to be a finger play, but you could also print out the turkeys to use as a prop. I like to incorporate number songs into our morning circle-enjoy. “Five Big Turkeys” by Heather Asselin Five big turkeys too fat to fly, Sat in the barn and started to cry. One plump turkey had an idea, “Gobble! Gobble! Gobble!” He rolled out of there. (Repeat until no turkeys are left) In walked the farmer, “My oh my.” He sat in the barn and started to cry. “All my turkeys have rolled a

This is a rap that outlines the steps in solving a 2 digit X 2 digit multiplication problem. My students love rapping it with an instrumental rap track off of YouTube. They remember the process much more effectively when they are able to set the learning to music. This is the instrumental track we use. To the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot" this song helped my students for the past two years (since I wrote it) to remember which hands do what on an analog clock. I write it up on plain white butcher paper with the spoken part a different color than the song. I use a black marker to draw analog clocks around it.

My students always had a hard time remembering the difference between Divisor, Dividend, and Quotient so I came up with this chant they love to do. When I draw the long division symbol we call it the house. We talk about who is the visitor (divisor), who is in the house (dividend), and who is on the roof (quotient). After the first line they should knock on their desk three times to make the chant sound real.

This is a list of songs from You Tube that I typed up to have as a student script when learning to skip count. This is really useful for teaching multiplication, too! You can download these and use as a center, whole class practice, handout to send home, or sing and dance as a brain break. These could also be laminated and made into a reusable book. *These songs are not my original work. All of the songs I found on You Tube. I only typed the scripts to help my students learn the songs.
