It begins by talking about how Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King, Jr. "stood up" (or sat down) to make a difference. At the end of the song, I challenge children:Your chance to make a difference in the world is here. Stand up for your beliefs. Make your dreams clear.Ask yourself, "What problems do I see?" This song is great for Black Heritage Month, a unit on Identity, MLK Day, and preterite and imperfect identification. Students will watch the video, read the lyrics, identify preterite and imperfect verbs, then they will answer a series of questions which will guide them through understanding the song. Last they will answer some personal questions and make connections to their lives. This will take more than one class period unless you have block scheduleing.

**Please Note: the font shown in images is not the same as in the actual slide show. Please let me know if you have any problems with the formatting so I can revise.** I did not realize how emotional this song and the images I used were until I used this in my classroom and was looking at 30-some teary eyes. I love the simplicity of this song as well as the power of it. This was a great song to share with my students as an analytical piece. We have also played around with adding instrumenta

The Hanging Tree: Relating the Past & the Present

This is a follow exercise for correlating gospel and slave narrative songs to the "The Hanging Tree" song from the hit movie "Mockingjay". To pre-teach this worksheet, play a sample or two of gospel music like "Roll Jordan Roll" or "Wade into the Water". Then using this worksheet, have the students compare this "modern" song to those of the past. After using this journal exercise, students can work in small groups to compare their findings/opinions.

Music was an important part of the Civil RIghts Movement.Having students analyze song lyrics can increase interest and participation while connecting them to culture. The corresponding questions relate to course content like symbolism, theme, figurative language, direct text evidence, allusion, and the Civil Rights Movement. The formatting may look a little wonky on a Word Document.I recommend putting this on a GoogleDoc and setting it to "pageless."

Physics-Light Energy Science Warm-up or Bell-ringer

Physics-Light Energy Warm-up or Bell-ringer for science class. I designed this for use with my 6th grade, but its applicable in 8th grade or for high school physics classes. This warm-up is very easy to do and allows students to use their own prior knowledge to make connections between science their lives in a fun way. Also, by bringing the outside world into the science class, this increases the chances that next time the student hears one of these songs on the radio, they will flashback to sci
