If your students love music as much as mine do they will love this music analysis activity! Students are asked to listen to / read the lyrics for songs with a Hero Theme. They must choose their two favorites and discuss the meaning of the songs and why they like it. I also allow my students to pick any other song that they can find that relates to the hero theme. Finding Poetic elements and figurative language in Katy Perry's "Roar"

Using Katy Perry's "Roar" song, students are asked to find similes, metaphors, and idioms as well as poetic elements such as alliteration, assonance, rhyme, and repetition. As a closure activity, students are asked what they would like to "ROAR" about and use their answers to help introduce opinion writing.

Listening to holiday songs in the classroom can add to the spirit of the season, but often those popular songs have an interesting origin and meaning. The song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” by Band Aid (1984) is one example of “festive” music with a meaningful history. This lesson can stretch over 3+ days and lead to great class discussions about the meaning behind song lyrics.

Why “this” activity?I recently noticed in my 7th & 8th graders summary writing, they struggle to recognize and eliminate redundant phrases. Rather than drill and kill with redundancy examples, I was hoping to find something they might enjoy while linking to a cultural reference. Since I teach in SW Missouri, country music is an easy link to make for my kids. The song “Parked Out By The Lake” played on my favorite morning show, and I knew this would be how my kids could discuss redundancy
