The Power of Words
This activity uses a poem, song, and essay to analyze the complexities of the N-word. As this comes up in some of the literature that we read in middle school and high school, it is essential to address hate speech including this word in a safe and proper context with our students so that everyone has an appropriate understanding for reading this in literature.

Song of the Week Standards Practice
I have complied four songs from various genres and time periods for students to practice standard based skills with. The focus standards of this activity are: theme, word choice, author's purpose, and parallelism. Students are also given a task where they can connect the song to their personal experiences or the world around them. I am teaching this during a rhetoric unit, but it would also be great for a poetry unit.
