Populations Lab: Design a Study to Estimate the Size of a Population - NGSS

Created by
Next Gen Sci Guy
This activity proceeds as follows:1. Students brainstorm about why it is important to estimate the population of organisms2. Students learn how to estimate population using the “sampling” technique3. Students learn how to estimate population using the “mark and recapture” technique4. Students design a study to estimate a real population, and carry out their study.5. Extension Activity: Students read an article about the overfishing of Bluefin tuna, which is down to 4% of the population that it w

This document (created by Lindsey DeLuca) includes handout information for students regarding a debate project on energy resources. Students create written information, as well as participate in a debate about energy resources. This project can be modified to fit into a variety of different classroom situations and classes: biology, general science, earth science, geology, environmental science, STEM, debate, physical science, etc. Energy sources included include: tidal, wind, solar, coal,

Ecosystem carrying capacity Deer Vs Coyote simulation (2 days)

The basis for this game is the O-Deer concept, however it is modified and simplified for my 6th grade science classes, and worked good in my 8th grade class as well. This is a 2 day activity and lab Day 1 Teacher reviews what is needed in an ecosystem and the rules of the game. Students do the activity, in 3 groups staged in 3 lines. They do this in a form of tag. Teacher records the population changes of the deer and coyotes over time. Data is recorded for 20 rounds but you can do more.

Frogs in a Pond Ecosystem Simulation

Created by
Bill Young
Students are assigned a starting population of frogs from one of 11 different ponds in the Central Florida area. They track the health of their population over a 10-year simulated timespan (10 rolls of the dice). Each time they roll, something happens to their frogs that year that impacts the population. Sometimes an alligator moves into their pond and starts eating frogs. Sometimes a hurricane hits increasing the size of their pond and the number of insects their frogs eat (resulting in a p

Food Web Game

Looking for an effective method to teach students how to understand food webs as part of an ecosystem unit? It is definitely a challenging topic and I struggled to create motivating ideas for my students. As a special education teacher, I need to address all learning styles in my classroom. For my students, this kinesthetic approach really proved effective. What I have provided is a game that incorporates the scientific method. It can be adapted to any grade level, with any population. This

Ocean Acidification Online Tutorial NOAA webquest

Great online activity using the NOAA interactive animation (be sure you and your students can access!). There is an interactive click and learn, students interact with the NOAA site to select sources of nutrient pollution after learning the basics of the ocean acidification process. They can then play a game at the end to earn a certificate. My students loved this! Excellent way for students to use a computational model and simulation to observe the process of acidification and the effects o

Online Activity & Worksheet-Plates On The Move Game

Using the "Plates On The Move Game" online from the American Museum of Natural History, students will learn about how tectonic plates affect our planet. They click on an orange marker to explore a place on the map. Students then examine how tectonic plates are moving there. Finally, they will answer a question and read more about the results from tectonic plate interactions."Plates On The Move Game" Link: https://www.amnh.org/explore/ology/earth/plates-on-the-move2/gameThis is a great online

Natural Selection is a fascinating topic in Science! It can also be hard for students to understand. This Activity will give students the ability to model natural selection in Real-Time!Students will use a simulation developed by PHET to watch Bunnies respond to different environmental stimuli!(Just don't let your bunnies take over the world!)

This game is designed to help students practice their ability to add decimals with differing place values all while deepening their science and history knowledge of the salmon migration and its importance to the Indians of the Northwest Coast. This interactive game will have students acting as salmon to begin their migration from the ocean to laying their eggs in fresh water, then doing math problems to solve a puzzle to see what animal may have eaten them during their journey. Cookie diamond mining activity simulation. Conservation and restoration.

This activity uses chocolate chip cookies to simulate mining for diamonds and worked really well as a review for my students of the earth layers and rock types. Also as a reinforcement lesson on environmental remediation and conservation. Supplies are simple (per student) 1 cookie 2 toothpicks or paperclips 1 paper plate Students have 2 rounds to mine 1st round they must use the tools provided 2nd round they must use the already mined cookie but can use tools and or their hands to mine.

Biomagnification Simulation

Biomagnification Activity: Using Play-Doh or clay, students create a food chain of fish, with small fish containing BBs or unpopped popcorn (representing toxins) that are passed up the chain. This hands-on simulation demonstrates the concept of biomagnification, showing how environmental toxins accumulate and intensify as they move through the food chain, culminating in the large fish.
