This Poetry Tasting activity is a great interactive way for students to become more engaged and excited about reading poetry. I have students complete this activity after I have introduced the Elements of Poetry. I decorate the room with table clothes plates, and books, and have students work together to "Taste" new poems from an assortment of poetry books and printed poems. I have them practice identifying the elements such as stanzas, lines, refrain, rhyme scheme etc.

Every year I give my students classroom jobs. This year I wanted to find a way to make this routine more relevant to my students by giving them a taste of real-life job hunting. Instead of assigning the students jobs, they will brainstorm skills and positive personality traits that could make them a good candidate for a particular job. Poetic Device Scavenger Hunt
Distribute some poems and have students identify and highlight poetic devices like similes, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and imagery. Discuss what these are and the overall impact on the reader's experience.
Poetry Analysis Jigsaw
Divide students into small groups, assigning each group a different poem. Have each group analyze the assigned poem's themes, tone, and literary devices, and present their findings to the class.
Poetry Slam or Performance
Organize a poetry slam where students can perform poems they’ve written themselves or those written by famous poets. This will help build confidence and strengthen their public speaking skills.
Writing Poetry from Different Perspectives
