This is a short play about a fictional account of a lunch between Maya Angelou, Malcolm X and W.E.B. Dubois. This play can be used a reader's theater piece for a literary center or for a Black History Month activity. This is a reader's theater adaptation of the short story The 11:59 by Patricia McKissack. The story centers around Lester Simmons, a Pullman car porter (and part of the first black union, The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters), as he passes on the legend of the 11:59 with the younger porters. This story will engage students, develop fluency skills, and invite deep discussions regarding events, beliefs, and character actions.

Jackie Robinson and the Bus - Small Group Reader's Theater
This reader's theater was written for four students. It is based on an incident that happened 11 years prior to Rosa Parks. Mr. Robinson was asked to move from his seat on a desegregated army bus and, when he refused, it led to a court marshal. Jackie Robinson was given an honorable discharge just a few months later.
