Current Event: summary and opinion with rubric
This is a weekly assignment I give to 4-5 fifth graders a week. This assignment asks the student to find a news story that interests them. They will read it, take notes about it, form an opinion about it, write a 1 paragraph summary, and 1 paragraph opinion about it. The student then presents their work by reading their summary and opinion, and then leading a class discussion about the article.

I’ve developed an opinion-writing project in which students read The Giver by Lois Lowry, answer a writing prompt, peer-edit, and revise their work. Cooperative learning activities take place during group discussions and peer editing.
